THE QUAD EVOLUTION
12th Sep 2009
Kelly Slater's quad adventure early this year was not a moment of madness. Over the last few years we have seen a strong growth in the popularity of quad fin surfboards, from fishes to performance designs. The quad guru 'Murray Bourton' sheds some light on the matter and his personal design evolution with quad fins.
R&D IN THE MENTAWAI
5th Dec 2008
I gotta say that many of the guys up there are pretty ill equipped for the waves they pay a fortune to surf. Most of them are under volumed and struggle just to catch the waves.
THE BOURTON TRI FIN
17th Nov 2008
I guess the purpose of this design is to explore the feel of the tri fin concept being a close cousin of the thruster which are all members of the single fin clan.
Muzzas Off
13th Oct 2008
Just a short note to let my customers know that I will be out to sea on an R+D mission for the next few weeks.
THE CUTTLEFISH
14th May 2008
The purpose of this crazy creation is two fold. Firstly I wanted to test a profile that was thick and narrower up front and a tail that is thin and wide. Secondly I wanted to build the deepest hull possible in this thick nose area to see how something this extreme would react especially when standing over it in full trim mode.
THE STINGER FISH BY BOURTON
11th May 2008
The big feature of this board is the deck shape. Up front I have designed a concaved deck that sits over a concaved bottom which meant that the rails up front were much thicker than the centre stringer which is quite the opposite of normal rolled decks.
THE NEW 5 FIN BONZA
16th Aug 2007
The idea here is to modernize the old Campbell Bros Bonza design so that it could match the performance of today’s high performance boards.
evolution of the quad gun
19th Jun 2007
After convincing myself with extremes ( 7.4 Quad Gun for Hawaii ) I realized that the real market is the long Indo winding walls that allow one to wind up to incredible speeds. Channel bottoms are well suited for the same reason. The stock lengths for Indo needed to be reduced since the size and rawness of Hawaii needed extra length but is hardly necessary in Indo where the walls are longer ,smoother , hollower and generally smaller.
THE CUSTOM COMEBACK
22nd May 2007
I can’t believe how many guys that have been ordering customs off me of late that have had previous flings with a tuf lite of some kind. It sort of makes me think that the bubble has burst as it seems the thrill of that sexy light tuf light under arm that had the cash register ringing the last few years is finally losing its shine. There is no doubt they had great rack appeal with their weight, shine and great paint job and this allure meant that many hit the water frothing thinking the lightness was going to take them to another level.
