Base uses a French glass fabric called Hexcel that has been around for over 50 years. The quality is second to none in clarity and tensile strength and is a major contributor to the reputation of our glassing technique.

The sanded finish is synonymous with Base surfboards and at this point, no other manufacturers have come consistently close to us with this type of finish. The beauty of this finish is that it feels like real fibreglass and it exposes poor sanding so even a layman can see bad workmanship if it is there. The sanded finish requires extra neat laminating to the point where the filler coat almost becomes the finish coat.

Each process is as important as the next but the filler-coat is the most vital for to a finished product that has nice sharp edges, not to heavy, feels nice and presents well. The filler-coaters need to have a keen eye for detail and be extremely precise as this process is where the sharp edges start to be created and where we can control the weight of the board. A filler-coat which is too thick can add too much weight to a board and a poorly laid filler does not allow the sanders to finish with a sharp edge which all affect the performance of a board.
