The Purpose of The Trippun Fish

To make a retro type fish that does more than go fast in a straight line.

Muzza's Ramblings

To me this file was a breakthrough in my personal understanding of this shaping program coz I pulled off something I was trying to do for ages. The relationship between the profile and the shoulder of the rail line was always gonna be a tricky one when attempting to run a flat deck into a plunging concave running down into a deep valley between the swallows which at the same time have been lifted up from the bottom line into an 11 ml vee.

Anyway I pulled it off after a couple of attempts and voila the Trippun Fish was spawned. The stringer line into the tail is a slow curve but the rail line in the back half is a much more intense curve enabling the board to get on rail real easy despite the lack of serious tail rocker. The design is a twin keel but with a difference in the keel which has the base chopped out of it in order to give it more pivot without the loss of drive.

The reason for the concave deck only in the rear is to give the back foot more instant leverage over a widish tail again for the purpose of getting it up the face on impulse something the normal Skip Frye fishes have trouble doing. There is no doubt it is not going to run as fast as the real flat fishes but I think most punters are bored with them already and are still wanting the same sensation but with more freedom on the face.

 

Prediction

I have written this even before the first prototype has been completed and I can’t wait to get it in the water so I will keep you all posted.

Since the first one came off the machine I thought I had tamed the program by rolling the deck up front and concaving it in the tail and escaping the inevitable dip in the rail that occurs when you confuse the stringer line and rail lines.

At the end of the day however, I realized that what was good for the back foot had to be good for the front foot, so I ran the concave on the deck forward not as deep, but noticeable. This confused the stringer and rail lines a lot less and made the design a lot simpler to shape and actually ride. When turning tightly having the back foot down in the concave I felt it would take a lot to dislodge me as I feel that I am in the board when turning and the deck rising up to the balls of my feet gave me more instant leverage from rail to rail.

To understand the opposite sensation to this remember those guys up in Canada whose job it is to ride those big redwood logs down the river to the timber mills. The only way to run a concave on the deck is to run it up to a ridge so I have positioned this ridge about 2 ½ inches in from the plan shape.

The vee in the tail and concave through the centre have been eased back slightly in order to blend rail lines more comfortably but are still radical by most standards. The plan shape is a bit more tapered and streamlined almost bullet like which has given it more drive.

Adding to that quest for drive I have turned it into a quad (could not help myself ) as the depth of the vee was such that a twinny set up was not enough to drive a vee this deep. In fact with this vee you can use even bigger quads as I have shown in these pics.

A vee of this depth fully encourages the twitch from rail to rail and every time you twitch you are bouncing water of two broader fins which in turn gives you more thrust so you get the benefit of a super pump and if given some elbow room of a long wall the speed you can pump these up to is mind blowing.

I have decided to offer them up as a mooned out swallow or a diamond tail and there will even be one with four clinker channels carved out of the tail to add even more thrust to a design that probably has enough already.
