Muzza's Trippin'

< Back to Bourton Home Page

Bourton LogoAt the risk of being perceived as some kind of latent "Gyro Gearloose" I feel compelled to include a new section to my site where I can cut loose with some crazy shit. My intention is to emphasize the benefits of specialization and to pose the question: how far can you go before the negatives outnumber the positives? Having shaped for well over 30 years I’ve seen the evolution almost from the beginning of modern design so there’s a lot of stuff I want to draw on, mix and match and ultimately use the ‘let’s see what we can come up with’ line of thought!

There is now an increasing demand for alternatives to ‘regular’ equipment. This is possibly due to disenchantment with whole pro thing or to put it even more simply that some customers have trouble riding the boards the pros ride. It may also be a rebellion or a left turn against what some may feel is a sheepish market place. Surfers are once again daring to be different and good on ‘em, things are getting a bit controlling out there in so many ways. Surfing is an escape and let’s never forget that it has so many more facets and levels of magnetism other than who is the best surfer competitively.

With the backing of a machine so advanced and leant towards custom specialization, it is also now so much easier to physically produce something way out on the left field. Most machines would flip a Johnson Spring trying to compute some of the weirdo shit I intend throwing at this one. This is where I see shaping machines really benefiting surfers, not in mass production but in freedom of design. So lets see how far we can push this thing!

Regardless of why this door has opened I reckon it is a worthwhile direction, constant experimentation in design so far has got us to where we are and ultimately may lead to further breakthroughs somewhere down the line with or without the media support of pro surfer endorsement. Now there’s a challenge!

The best design under a individual surfers feet is not necessarily the best design universally, in fact the best design is simply the one that suits it’s owner and its intended use. After all there are myriads of different requirements from all quarters that need addressing to maximise the enjoyment of surfing. People get off on riding 60’s side slipper or some sort of mini nose rider, others want to emulate modern day heroes. Hopefully when all is said and done this page may encourage some and inspire others to dare to be different and to look a little deeper to find and use the boards that are best for them whatever form that may take.

How Does Muzza Do It?

The boards will be dreamt or inspired, designed on the computer, milled, shaped, glassed and finished, photographed and then put on the site. After that it will be handed around the factory for road testing and from there will go to the Base Superbank shop in Coolangatta, QLD, to be further fondled and offered for sale. Give us a few months and there should be some humdingers down there for you to look at.
