Muzza's Trippin' - "THE SPINE FISH"

By Murray Bourton

The Purpose of the 6.0 Spine Fish

To design another little zappy small wave dart using some of the features of the Con Deck (CD) Fish combining some trippy bottom shapes for hopefully a hovercraft effect and some serious acceleration.

Board Specifications
Spine Fish Design

MODEL DIMENSIONS:

6'0 x 14'3/4 x 19'1/2 x 16' x 2'5/16, 10' wide swallow

IDEAL WEIGHT FOR MODEL: 70 to 85kg

DESIGN EMPHASIS:

Using a similar dishy plan and profile as the CD fish and adding a deep spine right through the length of the bottom. In the back half the spine is built into a deepish vee creating the double concave lifting effect and as it moves forward the double concave keeps it’s composure while plunging into a deepening single concave running out the nose, pretty well looking for a hydro foil gliding sort of feel.

Muzza's Ramblings

I am convinced that the Con Deck Fish is worth morphing into another mutation that may be capable of two sonic booms on the same wave. Hopefully the drop wing accelerator will get this tri-maran hull up early and planing and once it gets to top speed, I expect this little sucker to keep it. I just already know that let it loose on the points when its 3 feet and barreling the things going to take flight and the rider’s going to need one of those weirdo foiled out bike helmets to keep up. I fear it may struggle in close out type of beachies, that do not allow sufficient time for a board do its thing but I would question any boards’ ability to perform well in these types of conditions.

I am divided on its ability to handle choppy onshore conditions. On one hand with enough speed and lift the Spine could very well glide over the lot with the greatest of ease or maybe with all its hulls and concaves could just bog and choke amongst the chop, we will see eh? I reckon if you put those MRX Fiberglass Twin fins from FCS, this little puppy could become a greyhound with just one well executed bottom turn. If you noticed on the front slice I have incorporated a rounded chine on both outer rails that is designed to soften the acute effect of the deep nose concave especially at high speeds similar to the cathedral hulls used in some boat designs.

YOU CAN SEE THE SPINE RUNNING THE WHOLE WAY FROM THE TAIL TO THE NOSE!

Muzza's Prediction

So confident in my prediction that when I go for my first session on the Spine Fish, I am going to whack on a bleached afro Irish jig (wig), squeeze into a pair of tight red AFL ball poppers, take off and endeavour to get the sucker up and hydro foiling; then at top speed pull the mother of all soul arches, a modern day Sultan of Speed. Eat ya heart out Fitzy!

If you don’t get it please refer to the Morning of the Earth.

Results

Well I’ve got the fro', just looking for a pair of Sydney Swan’s ball poppers and a decent swell to launch, will keep you posted.Until then I gave Neil Purchase Junior the Spine Fish for a week and he reported back that it had flashes of brilliance!
