Bourton "Hybrid Small Wave" Shapes - THE RETRO FISH
THE RETRO
FISH (ORIGINALLY the CON DECK FISH)
The
Retro Fish is actually where this whole trippin’ busio
started. I sometimes need a catalyst to get off my
ginger and get creative and so it took a mate of mine Chris
Chamberlain to ask for something retro and fishy and supplied
me with a drawing. With a bit of help from Gav Upson who is
DH’s shaper we drew a planshape with chalk on the floor
until it looked right then measured it and whacked it up on
my program. So the juices were flowing and there was no stopping
me now Chris got more than he bargained for; concave
decks, concave bottoms, double concaved vees and to boot a
couple of drop wings for some added squirt.

Perhaps I went over the top and I think I read that in Chris’s
eyes when I handed it over to him, but anyway to cut a long
story short the thing went like a shower of shit and sort
of inspired me to step outside the box a little more
often. To get some detail on this check out the Con
Deck Fish on the Muzza’s Trippin’
segment. I named it later as the Retro Fish so as to fit it
into the Fun Fish
Series.
To date I have not surfed this design as my honeymoon with
the Quad is still red hot, but I have taken notes from those
that have. I am convinced it was a good move to include
the trailer fin and more importantly move it closer to the
big twin fins. One has to remember that tails like
this get skiddy if they are pushed and if you know what’s
coming, you know not to push the envelope. If you place the
small trailer too far back it will hang on and give you a
false sense of security and then let go if you push it too
far. When the trailer is closer to the front fins
they work as a team and tend not to fight against each other.
Also a close cluster will allow you to put any combination
oflarger or medium size fins without stiffening the board.

A
few guys have settled on this design as a twin fin and have
found that the drop wings behind the fins seem to
bight and steady the tail which extracts some dizziness
from a board with a tail as wide as this one.
In due course I intend to make a bigger one for myself and
see if I can take the design further as I have done with the
HPR Retro and the Bat
Fish.
